Nida School of Translation Studies

Anthony Pym, a sociologist who follows translation and cross-cultural communication closely, is the current president of the European Society for Translation Studies. He coordinates the Intercultural Studies Group at the Rovira i Virgili University at Tarragona and sits as a fellow in the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies. He is the author of Exploring Translation Theories (Routledge, 2010), The Moving Text: Localization, Translation, and Distribution (Benjamins, 2004), Negotiating the Frontier: Translators and Intercultures in Hispanic History (St Jerome 1999), and Method in Translation History (St Jerome 1998). He is currently researching issues connected with the pressing but paradoxical need for ever more translation in a globalizing world. Musa Dube, a feminist postcolonial biblical scholar has a professorship at University of Botswana and has recently completed two visiting scholar appointments at Union Theological Seminary (NYC) and University of Bamberg (Germany). Dube's research and publications are extensive, including numerous articles, chapters, and books. Her Postcolonial Feminist Interpretations of the Bible (2000) and The Bible in Africa; Transactions, Trajectories and Trends (co-edited with Gerald West, 2001) are just two examples of her important contributions in the area of biblical studies. Her social engagement is evident from her publications: HIV/AIDS and the Curriculum: Methods of Integrating HIV/AIDS in Theological Education (2003) and Grant Me Justice: HIV/AIDS and Gender Readings of the Bible (2004). More recently, Dube has written and taught on "Politics of Bible Translations: A Postcolonial Feminist Analysis." Supporting the two Nida Professors will be a distinguished staff of scholars and teachers who will offer lectures, presentations and tutorials during the two-week session. Successful applicants for the School will have an earned PhD (or a nearly completed one), a strong record of research, and professional experience in translation or interpreting.
