Online Certificate in Technical Translation and Electronic Tools
January-March 2008
No formal degree is required to enroll for the course. Successful participants will be awarded the corresponding certificate from the Fundació Universitat Rovira i Virgili.
50 hours, 10 weeks (15 January - 29 March 2008)
Aim: To develop professional skills in technical translation.
Teaching method: Teaching will be by web site, email, chat sessions and tandem project work.
Modules: Concepts and realities of the translation market; electronic tools for translators; translation techniques; translation projects
Requirements: Students will require a computer, a reasonably fast Internet connection, a working knowledge of Spanish and English, and at least 5 hours of study time per week.
Fees: The fees for the course are currently set at 500 euros.
Duration: The course comprises 50 hours and must be completed in 10 weeks.
Starting date: 8 January 2008.
Completion: Award of the certificate will depend on successful completion of all the exercises by 29 March 2008.

Course Modules
The Professional Market (10 hours). What Is Translation?; Text and Brief; Translator-Client Relations.
Electronic Tools (15 hours). Revision Tools; Internet Searches and Resources; Terminology Management Tools; Translation Memories (Trados, DéjàVu).
Translation Strategies (15 hours). Translation Techniques; Parallel Texts; Terminology Mining; Practical Considerations.
Final Projects (10 hours). Large translation projects to be carried out by the course participants, which will be expected to put into practice what they have learned in the translation assignments of the previous modules.
