Between Policies and Poetics: Itineraries in Translation History

3rd International Conference on Itineraries in Translation History

Translation policy and translation poetics can be terms that are parallel or overlapping or, in some cases, oppose each other. Research into translation history often means studying either the individual poetics of a translator, be it then the explicit or implicit poetics of translation or the politics (state-level) / policies (institutional level) of translation created in or by a system to serve a particular purpose.

The conference focuses on the policies of translation, their function, objectives and consequences, as well as the interaction, tension and/or opposition of the concepts of translation policy and the poetics of translation.

Possible subjects may include:

• Translation norms and translation poetics: interdependence or opposition?
• State-level/institutional translation policies and individual (language/translation) poetics of a translator
• Economic, business and financial translation policies in history
• Language politics and translation: hierarchies and hegemonies
• Historical translation-related language policies in a multilingual context that have bearings nowadays
• Methodologies for researching translation policies or poetics today and in history

Confirmed keynote speakers are:
Prof. Maria Tymoczko (University of Massachusetts)
Prof. Reine Meylaerts (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)

The conference will work in the format of parallel sessions and plenary sessions. The presentation time in parallel sessions is 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion. The length of the plenary talks will be 40 minutes, with 15 minutes for questions and discussion.

Speakers should submit an abstract (no longer than 250 words) and a brief CV (no longer than 150 words) by January 17, 2014 at the latest to TUK@ut.ee

Early submissions are encouraged.Notifications of acceptance will be sent by the end of February 2014.

Selected proceedings of the conference will be published.
